The routine use of skin markers is considered best practice in breast imaging because they effectively identify points of interest and aid in communication between technologists and radiologists. With a wide variety of skin marker types and styles, it can be challenging to decide which marker(s) will work best for your specific needs. Each marker is designed with its own unique shape for a particular identification purpose. To help mammography professionals better understand when each marker should be implemented, this guide will briefly explain the five types of mammography markers and their primary functions.

The Right Marker Matters!
Mole Markers
Help identify raised moles without interfering with breast imaging. These markers are designed with a radiolucent circle to appear as a soft ring around the mole without obscuring or hiding tissue behind it. The open circle center allows the marker to lay flat on the skin by surrounding the mole as opposed to covering it.

Nipple Markers
Help quickly identify the location of nipples as a point of reference for measurements, proper positioning, and comparative image reviews. These markers are designed with a radiopaque “BB” to appear bright white in images without obscuring tissue when the breast is properly positioned with the nipple out-of-profile.

Scar Markers
Designed with a flexible raised line to emulate visible scar tissue to help prevent confusion and quickly explain local breast architecture distortion. These markers are offered in both a radiopaque solution with ultra-thin lines, to appear bright white without obscuring potential areas of concern, as well as a radiolucent solution.

Palpable Mass Markers
Designed with radiolucent angles to appear as a soft triangle to instantly highlight and draw attention to an identified palpated area of concern without hiding calcifications. The triangle shape was specifically selected because of its internationally recognized symbol of warning.

Area of Concern Markers
Radiolucent and designed to appear as a soft arrow pointing towards any area where breast pain or irregularities have been reported, to help Radiologists focus attention to the area without hiding or obscuring tissue.
